Useful Tips
No Google Maps: Google Maps has limited functionality in South Korea due to government restrictions on map data access. Instead, we recommend using Naver Map (map.naver.com) or Kakao Map (map.kakao.com), which offer reliable navigation for public transit and walking routes. Both apps are available in English and can be downloaded on iOS and Android.

Convenience stores: Convenience stores in South Korea are ubiquitous and highly convenient, offering a wide range of snacks, drinks, and travel essentials, 24/7. Major chains include CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, and emart24, all of which accept cash, credit cards, and T-money cards. These stores also provide services such as mobile SIM card purchases, T-money card recharges, and ATM access. Multiple convenience stores are available at Incheon (ICN), Gimpo (GMP), and Gimhae (PUS) airports, making it easy to grab essentials or pick up a transportation card upon arrival.

T-money: The T-money card is a rechargeable transportation card widely accepted across South Korea, making it especially convenient for frequent public transportation users. It can be used to pay fares on public transportation and taxis, and is particularly useful for the Busan metro, buses, and the AREX all-stop train, where foreign credit cards are not accepted. You can purchase a T-money card at convenience stores (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, emart24, etc.). It can also be recharged at convenience stores with cash or foreign credit cards.

Wowpass: Alternatively, Wowpass is a prepaid card designed for foreign travelers in South Korea, allowing cashless payments, ATM withdrawals, and public transportation access, including subways, buses, and taxis. It can be recharged with foreign credit cards and is available at Incheon Int’l Airport Terminal 2 (https://www.wowexchange.net/exchange/location/view/317) and other select locations (https://www.wowexchange.net/exchange/location/list?lang=en-US).

Busan Metro: Tickets can be purchased from vending machines at subway stations, but most foreign credit cards are not accepted. Instead, cash, T-money, or Wowpass cards can be used for metro fares.

Busan buses: In Busan, city buses cannot accommodate large luggage due to limited space and safety concerns. Personal items must weigh less than 20 kg and not exceed 50 × 40 × 20 cm in size. If you are carrying larger suitcases, please use the subway or taxi instead. Additionally, Busan buses accept fare payments only in cash, T-money, or Wowpass cards – credit cards are not accepted. Please note that travel times may significantly vary depending on traffic conditions, especially during rush hours.

AREX express train: If you are travelling from Incheon Int’l Airport (ICN) to Seoul Station by the AREX express train, the AREX station at the airport has a manned ticket counter that accepts both cash and foreign credit cards. Tickets can also be reserved online at the following link: (https://www.airportrailroad.com/rt/mrktnDisc.do?param1=iwN2ukzoiAL%2BIhfH%2FUVNpbBFUBtzIT%2F6vtAHR53KshE%3D).

AREX all-stop train: If you are travelling from ICN to GMP or Seoul Station by the AREX all-stop train, tickets can be purchased from a vending machine. However, most foreign credit cards are not accepted. Instead, cash, T-money, or Wowpass cards can be used for all-stop train fares.

Taxis in Busan: Most taxis are metered, and fares start at 4,800 KRW for the first 2 km, increasing based on distance and time. While drivers may not speak English, you can use a translation app or show your destination in Korean for smoother communication. Payment can be made in cash, credit cards, T-money or Wowpass cards. While most foreign credit cards are generally accepted, it can be helpful to have a backup payment method in case a transaction is declined. For added convenience, you can hail taxis using apps like Kakao T or Uber, which connect users with local taxi drivers. Please note that travel times may significantly vary depending on traffic conditions, especially during rush hours.
